DAPP joins Ministry of Gender in celebrating mothers
Every year, Malawi celebrates women on Mothers’ Day which falls on 15 October. Mothers’ Day is a celebration that dates back to 1600 and is celebrated in over 46 countries across the world.
The celebrations recognise women for the good work they do and is characterised by giving women presents. In Malawi, a public holiday for Mothers’ Day falls on 15 October.
In commemoration of Mothers’ Day this year, the Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare cheered women and children at Ndife Amodzi Community Based Organisation (CBO) in Nthobwa village, Traditional Authority Chadza in Lilongwe district.
The Minister Dr Jean Kalilani presided over the colourful event that was characterised by traditional dances, testimonial speeches and presentation of gifts in form of clothes to women and children at the CBO donated by Development Aid from People to People (DAPP) Malawi.
Speaking during the event, the Minister said her office is committed to supporting women and children with a number of strategies put in place to protect them from different forms of abuses for instance civil cases, property grabbing, early marriages and programs like social cash transfer that support ultra-poor families.
She extended her gratitude to DAPP Malawi for making a donation of clothes for women and children which were handed over during the event.
In his remarks, Patrick Maele who represented the Country Director for DAPP Malawi, said DAPP is committed to celebrating women and grateful to be a part of the activity.
Ndife Amodzi CBO was established by Hawa Makwinja who is the current Director to bring together women from the community through small scale businesses like farming to ensure economic independence.
