Launching the Humana People to People Progress Report 2018

HPP Progress Report 2018The Federation Humana People to People (Humana People to People) is excited and proud to release its Humana People to People Progress Report 2018, demonstrating the value of its work.
The report provides an insight into the work of Humana People to People and its 30 member associations over the past year, including the shared commitment to attain impact, accountability and transparency.
Interestingly, the report shows how simple, strong and low-cost development concepts can be taken to scale when they build on the strength of the many people who take a lead in improving their own conditions.
In 2018, working across five continents, members of the Federation Humana People to People implemented projects in sustainable agriculture and environment, community development, health and education in 1,134 project units. These projects reached more than 9.5 million people and represent a vital contribution to reducing the effects of poverty and supporting communities to address some of the world’s most significant humanitarian and development challenges.
Some case studies contained in the Progress Report highlight how Humana People to People approach to development is transforming lives. Thus the Humana People to People community based and people-driven project design remains key in creating lasting development.
The UN 2030 Agenda continues to guide the activities undertaken by Humana People to People and its members. Humana People to People will continue striving to help countries meet their Sustainable Development Goals, in the hope of alleviating suffering ad creating lasting positive change

We are pleased to release the DAPP Malawi Progress Report 2018.
The report highlights the activities, achievements and progress made in the 2018 together with people in the DAPP projects within the four key areas of education, agriculture, health and community development.
We greatly appreciate the support and assistance rendered from all development partners and stakeholders who have been recognized in the publication and look forward to continued work relationships and new developments in 2019 and beyond.

DAPP Malawi celebrates International Women’s Day

Celebrated yearly on the 8th of March, international Women’s Day is a worldwide event that celebrates women’s achievements from the political to the social while calling for gender equality.

Under the theme "Think equal, build smart, innovate for change, Advancing the status for all women and girls in Malawi", DAPP Malawi through its Satellite Tailoring course participated in the 2019 international women's day celebrations that took place at Namitete secondary school in Lilongwe district.

Through a pavilion, two female DAPP trained graduates from a four months tailoring course offered at DAPP Teachers Training Colleges which targets vulnerable adolescent girls and young women from areas surrounding the TTC’s with the aim of equipping them with skills and knowledge in tailoring skills so that they become independent members of society, displayed an array of products both sown during their training at the TTC and those sown post-graduation.

Guest of honor Minister of Gender, Children, Disability & Social Welfare, Mrs. Cecilia Chadzama emphasized on the importance of achieving gender equality for all women and to not put a limit on what girls can achieve.

While UN Coordinator to Malawi Ms. Maria Jose Torres highlighted the importance of seeing more girls and women in science and technology related fields.

“Women are not minorities, men need to support women in their endeavor’s” said member of parliament Mr joseph Njovuyalema

The event was graced by stakeholders including, Action Aid Malawi, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Women (UN Women), Plan International, World University Service of Canada Malawi, Care Malawi, Malawi Human Rights Resource Centre (MHRRC) and Christian Aid. The celebration was spiced up by various dances and plays.

On the 27th November, DAPP Malawi took part in an Open Press Conference organized by HUMANA People to People Italia and Co.S.R.A.B. Held at the headquarters of Città Studi di Biella. DAPP Malawi presented its programs with focus on the 400 Primary School project which is also supported by HPP Italy.

The meeting was an opportunity to illustrate the project “400 primary schools”, financed by HUMANA thanks to the revenues from the sale of used clothes collected in the territory of Biella. The project was explained by Lisbeth Thomsen, responsible for the activities of DAPP Malawi, a sister organization to HUMANA Italy in Malawi.

“400 Primary School started with a small group of 18 teachers in 2012, today there are 90 teachers working in 73 schools. To date, the project has reached over 35.000 beneficiaries. Thanks to the support of HUMANA Italia, the children study in a stimulating environment and the teachers are updated on the most modern teaching methods. Education is one the most critical challenges for Malawi, where today, only 52% of the children who has started primary school complete school” said Thomsen during a skype call from Blantyre.

“Today’s meeting has shown how the simple gesture of donating a used dress to HUMANA is the first step in a well-structured chain of solidarity, in which many people work to carry out initiatives of great social impact: it’s because of that first little gesture that everything can begin” said Alessandro Strada, Head of the Marketing HUMANA People to People Italia.

HUMANA People to People Italia has been collecting and recovering clothes in Biella since 2015 and since 2017, HUMANA has reconfirmed and expanded its presence by winning the announcement of the public tender announced by Consorzio Smaltimento Rifiuti Area Biellese. Since the beginning of 2018, the generosity of the citizens of Biella have allowed HUMANA to collect approximately 465 thousand kilos of clothes, shoes and accessories that were no longer used.

The international cooperation organization funds solidarity and development projects in India, Mozambique, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Namibia and Zambia. The activity of HUMANA Italy will also contribute to supporting local social initiatives, such as the sharing canteen “Il pane quotidiano di Biella”.

DAPP joins Ministry of Gender in celebrating mothers

Every year, Malawi celebrates women on Mothers’ Day which falls on 15 October. Mothers’ Day is a celebration that dates back to 1600 and is celebrated in over 46 countries across the world.
The celebrations recognise women for the good work they do and is characterised by giving women presents. In Malawi, a public holiday for Mothers’ Day falls on 15 October.
In commemoration of Mothers’ Day this year, the Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare cheered women and children at Ndife Amodzi Community Based Organisation (CBO) in Nthobwa village, Traditional Authority Chadza in Lilongwe district.

The Minister Dr Jean Kalilani presided over the colourful event that was characterised by traditional dances, testimonial speeches and presentation of gifts in form of clothes to women and children at the CBO donated by Development Aid from People to People (DAPP) Malawi.
Speaking during the event, the Minister said her office is committed to supporting women and children with a number of strategies put in place to protect them from different forms of abuses for instance civil cases, property grabbing, early marriages and programs like social cash transfer that support ultra-poor families.
She extended her gratitude to DAPP Malawi for making a donation of clothes for women and children which were handed over during the event.
In his remarks, Patrick Maele who represented the Country Director for DAPP Malawi, said DAPP is committed to celebrating women and grateful to be a part of the activity.
Ndife Amodzi CBO was established by Hawa Makwinja who is the current Director to bring together women from the community through small scale businesses like farming to ensure economic independence.
