In response to Covid-19
DAPP Malawi in partnership with Humana People to People Spain is responding to the Covid-19 pandemic through donation of sanitary materials in selected rural communities around 16 districts of Blantyre, Neno, Mangochi, Dedza, Chikwawa, Nsanje, Lilongwe, Kasungu, Ntchisi, Dowa, Machinga, Mangochi, Ntcheu, Zomba, Mulanje and Chiradzulu.
The three-month Covid-19 response initiative targets to reach 10,000 people, running from May to August 2020.
In Traditional Authority Mbwatalika in Lilongwe district, Mdzobwe CCAP (Church of Central Africa Presbyterian) Mission church is one of the beneficiaries of the intervention. The church received a bucket with a tap and tablets of soap for handwashing.
According to one of the church elders Mr Latiel Malela, the church congregates over 700 people weekly.
“In a week we have over 700 congregants, we are trying to control the gatherings through observing the one metre social distances but we still needed this intervention to create awareness and promote the handwashing behaviour among our members,” he said.
On coping with the new development at the institution, Mr Malela said only members that wash their hands with soap are allowed entry into church. He added that as a church they secure the availability of soap and water for the hygienic practice but not all members attending the service have a face mask hence a call for support with reusable face masks or skills to locally produce the masks.
The intervention is being championed by DAPP graduated teachers under the network of graduated teachers known as 400 Primary Schools who voluntarily stick together to share ideas and skills on how they can improve the environments around their schools.
