Since 1996, DAPP Malawi has been actively improving livelihoods and communities in need across Malawi through its social development projects.
DAPP is implementing 16 projects within education, health, agriculture and community development in 24 districts that span across the country's three regions
The DAPP Secondhand Clothes and Shoes project has opened a new retail shop in the Commercial city of Blantyre, situated along the Victoria Avenue street opposite ECO-Bank. Opening its doors on the 13th of July 2020, the shop expects to satisfy customers with quality and modernized clothes and shoes. The Shop Manager Anthony Mdeka says the Clothes and Shoes project will make available high quality clothes and shoes available to Malawians at a fair and affordable price. He assured the customers of quality items for all sizes; children, ladies, and men.
In the light of Covid-19, the management has assured its customers that all Covid-19 preventative measure are put in place and being followed which include washing hands with soap and strict use of facemasks in the shop.
The retail shop is the third one to be opened in Blantyre with the others behind Van Mali building and along Haile Selassie road opposite Puma Filling station. Proceeds from the sale of the second hand clothes and shoes support the implementation of DAPP Malawi’s development programs in areas of agriculture, education, health and community development.
In the month of December, the DAPP Clothes and Shoes project introduced a competition for its bale customers in its 9 wholesale shops.
The customers who made the most purchases between December and January were qualified to win bales of clothes worthy MWK66,250, MWK44,300 and MWK25,250 for first place, second and third respectively. Three customers who made the most purchases were to win bales of clothes from their respective shops.
On 9 February, the Clothes and Shoes project started award the customers in Zomba and Blantyre shops. The first place winners were awarded a 45KGs Ladies mix blouse bale, 15KGs Children 0 to 6 for second place and 45KGs sport economy for third place.
The clothes and shoes project apart from promoting environmental conversation through recycling and reusing of clothes, also create self employment for bale customers who buy clothes at wholesale and sell on retail to earn a living. Funds generated from the sale of Second-hand Clothes and Shoes support DAPP's implementations of social and economic development projects by DAPP.
DAPP Malawi works with various communities in Malawi in order to promote social and economic development through the implementation of various programs in Health, Agriculture, Community development, Educations and the selling of second hand clothes.
With the aim of improving the social economic status of widows in Mulanje, Chiradzulu, Phalombe and Thyolo districts, DAPP Malawi donated 400 clothes packages to a local NGO Shalom Care International (SHACAI) which have helped in reaching out to a total of 653 widows with Mulanje receiving 300 packages, Thyolo 88, Chiradzulu 130 and finally Phalombe 135. The packages were distributed in various centers namely Mulanje Mission Primary School Hall, Chikondano Orphanage Ground in Thyolo, Nkhulambe EPA Ground and Mombo Primary School Ground.
Speaking during the distribution exercise which took place from 29th January to 2nd February, Shalom Care International Policy and Advocacy Manager Mrs Mphatso Msangambe said as Shalom, they are very happy with the donation from DAPP “We work with Windows, Orphans and Vulnerable women. There was a need for clothes and DAPP came through for us. For that we are grateful. It is also worth noting that DAPP Malawi is the first organization to donate to Shalom” she said .
The DAPP Clothes and Shoes project has over the past 25 years contributed significantly to the empowerment of the vulnerable and poor, children, youth, women and men in the rural communities through the projects implemented by DAPP within education and vocational training, agriculture and food security, community development, and health; thus improving families’ access to good sanitation facilities, clean and safe drinking water; improved agriculture techniques; quality primary education for children taught by graduates from DAPP colleges and access to health and nutrition information

DAPP Malawi through one of it’s Teacher training colleges known as DAPP Dowa Teachers Training College (TTC) aims at not only equipping youth to become teachers for rural government primary schools, but also equips vulnerable adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) who reside in areas surrounding the TTC with skills and knowledge in tailoring through a four months tailoring course. Through the course, adolescent girls and young women are taught how to produce eight various items before they graduate from the institution with a certificate. The items produced are mostly kept on displays.
From the 11 - 12 July, DAPP Dowa TTC donated clothes sown by its graduated tailoring students under the four months project held at the TTC known as Satellite to two orphanages in the district namely Hope Grace Alliance Orphanage and When the saints orphanage. The orphanages which care for children who are between the ages of six months to 25 years old were grateful for the donation and said they will work hard in their education so that they can also go to college and learn various skills. Mr Paul Mtenje, Social worker for Circle of Hope Grace Alliance said as an institution and organization, they are thankful for the donation and do not take it lightly. Through its four TTC’s namely Amalika, Chilangoma, Dowa and Mzimba, DAPP Malawi with funding from Sympany Netherlands is training vulnerable adolescent girls and young women in tailoring skills and knowledge through the four months course known as Satellite and plans on equipping 720 adolescent girls and young women in these skills by 2020
