Orphanhood generally has long-term effects on an individual’s life, with children mostly dropping out of school due to a lack of support. This can lead to a cycle of poverty.

But the story of Fedson Selwin from Mangombo Village, Traditional Authority Mkanda in Mulanje District, is one of resilience and determination. Despite his difficult childhood, he successfully pursued his passion and now thrives in the steel engineering industry.

For the 37-year-old former DAPP Mikolongwe Vocational School student, life was tough from the start. He lost his father at a young age, and his late mother—a struggling smallholder farmer with limited resources—could barely make ends meet. With little at home, Fedson depended on well-wishers and charities for his education

Fedson’s ambition to become a steel engineer was sparked by a leading figure from his home area, whose successful entrepreneurship in the field inspired him. This dream started culminating into reality in 2010 when European Coalition of Positive People offered scholarships to young people passionate about technical and vocational training. Determined to seize the opportunity, Fedson enrolled at DAPP Mikolongwe Vocational School in 2010 to pursue a course in welding and fabrication, marking the beginning of his journey to turn his aspirations into tangible success.

Following his graduation, he worked in various steel companies, refining his skills and gaining industry experience. However, he always wanted to establish his own steel engineering company and in 2016, that dream became a reality when he launched Fed Steel Engineering Company in Lilongwe opposite Mchesi Primary School, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his life.

Since its inception, the company has grown tremendously. It employs over 20 youths, owns a fleet of 20 vehicles used for transporting goods and services, with some leased to other institutions. Fedson also offers free training opportunities to young, vulnerable individuals and sponsors the education of 30 needy secondary school students.

Fedson has also invested in state-of-the-art steel machinery, with plans underway to establish his own steel factory and warehouse. Beyond steel engineering, he also engages in commercial agriculture, managing a 50-hectare of farmland.

Fedson’s journey from a struggling orphan to a successful entrepreneur is a true testament to the power of resilience, determination and opportunity. His story serves as an inspiration to many Malawian youths, proving that with the right skills, support and dedication, it is possible to rise above challenges and achieve greatness.
