As the Poverty Reduction of Vulnerable Beneficiaries through Community-Based Financial Organization (CBFO) and Small-scale Enterprise Development Project approaches its conclusion in March 2025, DAPP Malawi proudly reflects on the remarkable strides made in empowering rural communities. Through targeted interventions in Zomba, Phalombe, Chikwawa, and Nsanje districts, the initiative has significantly enhanced financial access, community resilience, and economic empowerment.
Empowering Communities Through CBFOs
At the heart of the project are the 200 CBFOs that have received comprehensive training in financial literacy, business management, and transparent loan practices. These skills have not only built financial capacity but also fostered accountability and trust among members. By the close of 2024, 35 CBFOs had accessed loans totaling over MK30,340,000 from formal financial institutions, including NBS and FDH banks. These loans have empowered members to expand their businesses and invest in their futures.

Promoting Sustainable Livelihoods
The adoption of sustainable agricultural practices has been another cornerstone of the project’s success. Over 1,800 households embraced the use of Mbeya organic fertilizer, which has improved soil fertility and crop yields. Additionally, training in the production and use of briquettes as an alternative to charcoal has contributed to environmental conservation while offering households a cost-effective energy solution.
Linking Communities to Markets

The project also facilitated market linkages for 100 CBFOs, ensuring that smallholder farmers can reliably sell their produce. This initiative has provided stable income sources, strengthening economic resilience and reducing poverty within these communities.
A Commitment to Inclusivity
DAPP Malawi has prioritized inclusivity, ensuring active participation from women, youth, men, and marginalized groups. This approach has fostered social equity and empowered individuals to take control of their economic destinies.
Looking Ahead
As we prepare to wrap up the project in March 2025, the focus remains on ensuring the sustainability of these interventions. By continuing to strengthen financial inclusion, promote sustainable practices, and support community-driven development, DAPP Malawi is confident that the impact of this project will endure for years to come.
Together, we have demonstrated the power of community-driven solutions to create lasting change. Let’s continue to build on this success, one CBFO at a time!
