Project Empowers 55 Girls in Mzimba with Vocational Skills
DAPP Malawi, in partnership with United General Insurance (UGI) Company Limited and with funding from Chiesa Valdese of Italy through Humana Italy, has successfully empowered 55 vulnerable girls in Mzimba District with vocational skills and start-up support under the Skills for Youth Empowerment Project.
Implemented over six months at DAPP Mzimba Teacher Training College (TTC), the project provided intensive training in Tailoring and Fashion Designing — equipping participants with practical, income-generating skills aimed at fostering self-employment and economic independence.
Originally, 60 girls from Traditional Authorities Mbelwa, Mabulabo, Mzukuzuku, and Kampingo Sibande enrolled in the programme. Of these, 55 successfully completed the training, marking a significant milestone in strengthening livelihood opportunities for vulnerable young women in the district.
At the graduation ceremony, UGI demonstrated its commitment to youth empowerment by presenting sewing machines and essential tailoring equipment valued at K15 million. The start-up toolkits are expected to enable the graduates to immediately begin establishing their own businesses.
Speaking during the event, UGI representative Limbikani Kathewera emphasised the broader impact of investing in young women.
“When girls are given skills and the right support, they transform not only their own lives but also the lives of their families and communities,” Kathewera said.
DAPP Mzimba TTC Principal Dominic Nali highlighted the initiative’s alignment with Malawi Vision 2063, particularly in advancing human capital development among vulnerable youth.
“This project has provided these young women with practical skills and confidence to become productive citizens and job creators,” Nali said.
Representing the graduates, Mervis Banda expressed heartfelt gratitude to DAPP Malawi, UGI, and the funding partners for creating an opportunity that has reshaped their futures.
“We have gained more than just tailoring skills. We have gained hope, confidence and a future. We are now ready to stand on our own,” Banda said.
The Skills for Youth Empowerment Project demonstrates the transformative power of strategic partnerships in advancing youth empowerment, promoting sustainable livelihoods, and driving inclusive rural development.
