Hope Returns to the Classroom: Learners of Banga Primary School Back in Class

At Banga Primary School, the sound of the classroom bell once faded for learners pushed out by poverty, disability, and orphanhood. For many children, prolonged absence from school due to lack of basic resources and family support had placed their education—and future—at risk.
Through the Building a Brighter Future for Girls and Children with Disabilities Project, implemented by DAPP Malawi in collaboration with FEDOMA and Disability Partnership Finland, and funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland through UFF Finland, renewed hope began to take shape. The Community Action Coordinator at Banga Primary School played a central role in identifying vulnerable learners who had stopped attending classes. Working closely with school authorities and community members, assessments were conducted to understand the specific challenges faced by each child and to determine appropriate support mechanisms.

Following this engagement, the identified learners were supported to return to school. Today, they are back in class—actively participating in lessons, rebuilding confidence, and reconnecting with their peers. The removal of key barriers has enabled them to focus on learning, social interaction, and personal growth, while restoring hope within their families.

The return of these learners has had a visible and positive impact on the school and the surrounding community. Their presence stands as a testament that inclusive education is achievable when communities are empowered and donors invest in targeted, grassroots solutions. The intervention continues to demonstrate that, with timely and coordinated support, every child—regardless of background or ability—can access education and work toward a brighter future.
