Ellen BandaEllen Banda’s absence from Mtayafuko Primary School was not caused by a lack of interest in learning, but by the harsh realities of poverty. Coming from a highly vulnerable household, Ellen was forced to stop attending school when her family could no longer afford basic necessities such as a school uniform and writing materials.

Her situation was identified through the Building a Brighter Future for Girls and Children with Disabilities Project, implemented by DAPP Malawi in collaboration with FEDOMA and Disability Partnership Finland, with funding from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland via UFF Finland. The project aims to address structural and practical barriers that prevent children—especially girls and children with disabilities—from accessing education. Following an assessment of Ellen’s needs, targeted support was provided to enable her return to school.

Today, Ellen is back in the classroom, attending lessons with renewed enthusiasm and confidence. The project continues to support her with essential learning materials to ensure sustained attendance and uninterrupted progress.

Ellen’s story illustrates how timely, donor-supported intervention can transform lives. By addressing practical barriers and providing consistent community-based support, the project has restored her right to education and opened the door to new possibilities. Her return to school stands as a powerful example of how inclusive education initiatives can change the trajectory of vulnerable children’s lives.
